
Why we put our bathroom heaters through a “steam torture test”
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. Between the thick steam, the accidental splashes, and the way the temperature jumps from freezing to tropical in five minutes, it’s a brutal place for a heating element to live. Now, you’ll see an “IP65 rating” on the box. That’s great, and it means the housing keeps out dust and a bit of splashing water. But a rating is just a snapshot in time. It doesn’t tell you what happens to the materials after two years of daily showers. That’s why we don’t just trust the rating. We put every batch through damp-heat aging tests before they ever leave our floor. The sneaky side of steam Here is the thing about water vapor: it’s tiny. Way smaller than a droplet of water. Over time, humidity finds its way through seals that look perfectly airtight to the naked eye. Once that moisture gets inside and hits the electrical contacts or the quartz lamp, things go south. You get oxidation, or worse, a total short circuit. To stop that, we simulate years of bathroom steam in just a few weeks. We cycle the units through extreme heat and humidity to force any weak solder joints or flimsy gaskets to fail right now, in our lab, rather than in your home. Dealing with the “shock” Infrared lamps get incredibly hot. When that intense heat meets a cold, damp bathroom, it creates a thermal shock. We watch closely for something called “creep.” It’s basically when plastic or rubber starts to deform slowly under the stress of heat and moisture. If a seal shrinks by even a tiny fraction of a millimeter, that waterproof protection is gone. The trade-offs Making a heater that actually survives this isn’t cheap. We have to use higher-grade silicone gaskets and special coatings on the internal wiring to stop corrosion. It makes the unit a bit bulkier and costs more to build. You can’t just throw a plastic cover over a lamp and hope for the best. We obsess over the failure points—mostly where the cables enter the unit and where the lamp sockets sit. If a heater can handle 500 hours of saturated steam without the insulation dipping, it’s ready. It means when you step out of a hot shower, the heater just works. No burnt-out lamps, no tripped breakers. Just warmth.
