If you’re putting an infrared heater in a pergola or a bathroom, you’re basically throwing it into a boxing match with humidity and crazy temperature swings. It’s a tough environment. We don’t like guessing if a unit will survive. Instead, we take every batch and put them through “damp-heat aging tests.” Basically, we try to break them in the lab so they don’t break at your place. The battle with moisture Here’s the thing: water vapor and high-wattage heating elements don’t get along. At all. In a pergola, you’ve got condensation and thick air. If even a tiny bit of moisture sneaks past the seal of the quartz tube or hits the electrical terminals, the whole thing can short out. To stop that, we blast these heaters with extreme heat and humidity. We force the moisture into the housing to see where it leaks. It’s the only way to find those tiny gaps in the gaskets or weak spots in the potting compound that a quick visual check would totally miss. Heat, rust, and cracks It’s a vicious cycle. Heat makes materials expand, and moisture makes them corrode. Over time, this creates microscopic cracks in the protective coatings. While we’re aging the units, we keep a close eye on the electrical resistance. If that number starts drifting, it means the element is oxidizing too fast. We need that quartz envelope to stay crystal clear and strong, even when it’s being shocked by rapid temperature changes. The balancing act You might think, “Just seal it in plastic and call it a day.” But that’s a trap. If we seal the unit too tight, the internal parts basically cook themselves in their own heat. It’s a delicate balance. We have to design seals that keep the rain out but still let the heat breathe. That’s why the housing is a bit bulkier than a standard indoor heater. It’s a small trade-off for the extra thermal buffers and moisture barriers that actually keep the thing running.
