
Picking the Right Infrared Lamp for Your Bathroom
When it comes to heating your bathroom, your first instinct might be to just buy the most powerful lamp you can find. But here’s the thing: bigger isn’t always better. If you overdo it, you’re just throwing money away on your electric bill. We use short-wave infrared lamps because they don’t bother trying to heat the air—they go straight for you. It’s that instant, cozy warmth on your skin the second you step out of the shower.
Getting the Power Right
If you’ve got a tiny powder room (under 4m²), keep it simple. A single 250W to 400W lamp does the trick. If you try to cram a 1000W unit in there, the room hits the target temperature way too fast. The thermostat will just keep clicking on and off, which kills the filaments and wears the lamp out way sooner than it should. For those mid-sized bathrooms (between 4m² and 8m²), you’ll want a few lamps working together. I usually suggest 600W to 800W per unit. This spreads the heat across the ceiling so you don’t end up with one scorching “hot spot” while your toes are still freezing. Then you have the massive master baths—anything over 10m². For those, you’re looking at high-density 1000W+ lamps or setting up a few different heat zones.
The “Wet Room” Reality
Bathrooms are humid, and that’s a recipe for trouble if you aren’t careful. You need a housing with an IP44 rating or better to keep the moisture out. We use quartz glass envelopes because they can handle the shock of cold steam hitting a red-hot filament without cracking. But you also have to think about the hardware. A 1000W lamp gets incredibly hot right at the socket. If you put one of those in a cheap plastic fixture, it’ll warp or melt. Stick to ceramic insulators and heavy-duty wiring. It’s the only way to make sure the fixture stays safe while it’s cranking out heat.
Saving Some Cash on Power
The best way to keep your energy bill down? Stop leaving the lights on. Pair your lamps with a simple timer or a motion sensor. Since short-wave lamps hit full temperature in seconds, there’s no reason to “pre-heat” the room. Just flip the switch, feel the heat immediately, and let it shut off the moment you walk out the door. Simple.
