
Why we put our bathroom lamps through the “humidity torture test”
Bathrooms are basically death traps for heating elements. Think about it: you’ve got wild temperature swings and thick steam that just loves to eat through seals and ruin electrical contacts. That’s why we don’t just trust a “water-resistant” label on a spec sheet. Labels are easy. Actually making sure the thing won’t die in a steamy shower? That’s the hard part. So, we put every single batch of our infrared lamps through damp-heat aging tests. Here is the problem with moisture. Water doesn’t just stay on the outside. It sneaks in. Vapor finds its way into the lamp base or the seal where the quartz meets the metal. Once that seal gives way, oxygen and moisture hit the tungsten filament, and pop—it’s gone. To stop that from happening to you, we throw our lamps into high-humidity chambers and crank up the heat. We basically force the lamps to fail in our lab so they don’t fail in your customer’s house. Then there’s the “shock” factor. These lamps get incredibly hot. If a stray drop of cold water hits a scorching quartz tube, it can cause tiny micro-cracks. We test for that specifically because it’s a silent killer. We also keep a close eye on the internal contacts. If the plating is too thin, the damp air triggers corrosion. That creates electrical resistance, which makes the base run way too hot. In the worst-case scenario, you’re looking at melted housing or a tripped breaker. Not a great look. The balancing act. It sounds simple: just seal it tighter, right? Not quite. If you seal a lamp too tight to keep the water out, you trap the heat inside. That’s a recipe for burnout. We spend a lot of time tweaking the gasket materials and the venting paths to find that sweet spot. You end up with a lamp that can handle a steamy bathroom without overheating the wiring. Buying lamps without this kind of verification is basically gambling with your failure rate. We’d rather break a few lamps on our own floor than have you deal with a bunch of angry phone calls from customers.
